As an online student, I have seen firsthand how both teachers and students rely on technology for completing assignments, communicating with each other, and setting up discussions and lectures. VR technology could make online learning substantially more engaging with classroom simulations.

Virtual reality can allow students to replicate a science experiment as a live event even if every student is not physically present together in the classroom. VR offers each student the opportunity to experience the experiment as if it were real.
Another exciting application of VR is being used to promote awareness about endangered species. Organizations like National Geographic have created VR simulations available to anyone who has access to VR equipment. You can take virtual tours in far off places such as the icebergs in the Arctic or the depths of the sea and have the opportunity to nest with penguins, hunt with polar bears, or swim with exotic fish. You’ll also see some of the harsh conditions many of these animals face like the melting of ice caps in the North and South Poles. Providing easy access to people to take virtual tours of these areas help to educate and bring awareness to how we can preserve our natural habitat and save our endangered species.
Virtual reality is still in the early stages of development and yet we have seen its powerful effects on humanity. Computer scientists are continuing to explore and push the boundaries of what it can offer. One thing is for sure, virtual reality is already becoming an integral part of how we live, work, and play.
